Christian tatoos
If you mention to a devout Christian that you would like to get a cross tattoo, then you may be told that according to the book of Leviticus: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” However, there are some Biblical scholars who believe that this passage is actually referring to a practice that pagans held at that time wherein they would carve images of their idols on their bodies at funerals. This was meant to make atonement for themselves as well as for the dead.
When you stop to look at the New Testament you will not find any restrictions about tattoos. Today these tattoos have become an extremely popular way for a lot of young Christians to make a public statement about their faith while also displaying some of the most meaningful Christian icons. These icons include praying Hands, chalices, Jesus, the Sacred Heart, angels, Mary, the Apostles and even the Holy Spirit. The one that is the most popular though is the cross, which is the universal sign of the Christian faith. With this in mind, tattoo artists have invented a lot of striking designs to incorporate into tattoos of the Christian cross.
Some of the more intricate Christian cross tattoos show a picture of Christ, but there are also a lot with an empty cross that are remarkably life-like having been done in wood grain. These crosses may be adorned with a crown of thorns or a Scripture passage. Of course, there can also be flames in the background or the cross' beams will be made of nails or spikes.
Other designs that are popular include butterflies that symbolize Christ's Resurrection and our rebirth as sinners. If you are patriotic, you may want to combine a tattoo of the Christian cross with your country's flag. In fact, you will find that the cross against a background of the American flag is popular in the Bible Belt.
There are also Christian cross tattoo designs have their roots in very early evangelization. At that time early Christians spread their faith by adapting their symbols to those of the cultures whose people they were trying to convert. This is actually where the Celtic cross has its roots. Today, Celtic Christian cross tattoos are very popular. The reason behind this is that the ancient Celts believed that their souls were nothing more than threads of a divine fabric to which they would return after death. Therefore, there are elaborate knots of “plaitwork,” which symbolize these threads. Of course, these Celtic crosses may also contain keys, leaves, spirals and animal figures. Oftentimes these images are borrowed from the ancient decorative script that monks used for embellishing the pages of Scripture that they spent their entire lives copying.
So, no matter what Christian cross tattoo you choose to have placed upon your body, you should know that you will be doing your part in spreading the Good News.
