Media's Influence in Your Home

There is no denying the effects that the constant input of media into your own home have on your family’s life and subsequently, your children’s development. Indeed, in the face of this media onslaught coming at you and your family from all directions by way of TV, cinema and the Internet, it would seem that there is very little that you can do to counteract its more damaging effects.

Traditionally the approach has been to severely restrict and in some extreme cases outright prohibit exposure to all sorts of media. This is hardly a practical solution to implement effectively and may end up backfiring in your face by actually causing your child to rebel against your strict rules. Of course no parent would want that to happen so it would be best to explore some other alternatives.

One of the most effective things that you can do as a parent is to start to take an active involvement in your child’s preferences in relation to media. Take the time to sit down with them and discuss the various aspects of popular teenage culture to get a better appreciation for where your child’s interests lie. You can also use this opportunity to find out exactly what your child is listening to or what his or her cinematic preferences are. If any of these should give you some cause for concern, you can check them out in detail on the Internet as to lyrical or thematic content as well as sex or violence depictions and then formulate a judgment as to the appropriateness for your child.

It can be quite a daunting task to make sure that your child receives only values that will be beneficial to his or her future but with a little care and attention you will find that the results are well worth the effort.
