When Your Spouse is Unemployed
One of the hardest things that any married couple will have to go through is the prospect of one or the other losing their job. This is difficult enough a challenge to contend with when both partners are working but the difficulty is magnified when the person who loses their job is the one person who is solely tasked with earning a living for the whole family. So daunting is this obstacle in fact that often times the marriage vow “for better or for worse” seems to have been written specifically for this very scenario!
In any case, when any one partner experiences the loss of their job, it automatically puts the entire family in a tenuous situation which can progressively worsens the longer the state of unemployment goes on. Even the most patient and understanding of spouses can be driven to uncontrollable negative feelings that may or not be consciously directed towards their particular partner. It is truly an unfortunate situation all around and one that can even extend its effects towards the children.
As a Christian couple however, we would do well to remember that the partnership that we have entered in with our spouse is a binding and lasting one, “for better or for worse” as the case may be and it is our individual responsibility to be there for our partner in all the ways that we are possibly capable of in these trying times.
If you are the one who has lost your job, you are understandably going through a difficult period in your life. Do strive to make yourself useful in some other way around the house though. This will not only help lighten the load for everyone in the family but will also keep you busy while you are waiting for that opportunity which is sure to turn up any day now.
